Barbie’s Legacy – An Intergenerational Conversation
In a powerful celebration of girlhood, community, and cultural impact, the Duxbury Student Union, Senior Center, and Free Library hosted an intergenerational discussion on the themes of the Barbie movie. The event brought together women of all ages—and even a few men—who shared personal stories, reflected on Barbie’s evolving role in society, and explored the film’s message of empowerment and equity. 52DMS Helps 5th Graders Transition to Middle School
The Duxbury Student Union’s 52DMS event provided 5th graders with the confidence and insights needed to navigate their transition to middle school. Through expert-led discussions on digital wellness, friendships, academics, and more—along with firsthand advice from current students—the event became an invaluable resource for families preparing for this milestone. Capturing Creativity: DSU Staycation Camps
The Duxbury Student Union’s February Staycation Camps brought creativity, hands-on learning, and fun to elementary and middle school students through themed days of adventure. From designing Mardi Gras masks and building LEGO superheroes to running a full-service restaurant, each camp offered a unique opportunity for kids to explore new skills and express their imagination. Through my photography, I captured the excitement and engagement of these young campers, highlighting the joy and energy that made each day a success. Supporting Students Through Uncertainty: Free Online Tutoring During COVID
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Duxbury Student Union, in partnership with Duxbury High School’s National Honor Society, launched a free online tutoring program to support students of all ages. This initiative provided academic assistance and a sense of connection during a time of isolation, ensuring that learning continued despite unprecedented challenges. McLean Chocolate Festival: The Sweetest Part of the Weekend
The Rotary Club of McLean brought together chocolate lovers from across the DMV area for the 9th Annual McLean Chocolate Festival, an event that not only satisfied sweet tooths but also supported meaningful community initiatives. With 18 vendors, including returning favorite Cameron’s Chocolates and first-time participant The Dough Jar, the festival showcased both delicious treats and inspiring stories of inclusion and entrepreneurship. Rotary Club of Great Falls Hosts Charity Bridge Tournament
The Rotary Club of Great Falls hosted its 4th Annual Bridge Tournament to benefit EduGIRLS, an organization that empowers girls in India and Nepal through education. This exciting event, held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, brought together 52 players to support a cause that aims to lift girls out of poverty and set them on the path to financial independence. These two articles showcase the power of civic participation and grassroots activism. The first covers the 2019 Virginia elections, capturing the excitement and importance of key races shaping the state’s future. The second, which made the cover, tells the inspiring story of Medhnaa and Kushaan Saran, a sibling duo dedicated to fighting human trafficking through their nonprofit, Touch of Life Foundation. Writing and photographing these events was an incredible experience, highlighting both democracy in action and the impact of young changemakers on a global scale.
